A Proud Tradition....  A Promising Future....

The Public Relations committee of Springport Public Schools sent home a survey with every student in the district.  A Global Connect call asked parent to fill out the survey and have their child return it to school.  The PR committe is interested in the continuous growth of Springport and meeting the needs of our students and the community.  Here are the results from the PR survey:

Survey Question Overlaps:

Question #1 In your opinion, what programs could be offered in order to better meet the needs of our children and make SPS better?

  • more tutoring/special ed. (sooner)/counseling
  • more AP/college prep/foreign language

The responses for this question were very specific in the major areas of tutoring and more college prep classes. Surveys that included thoughts about more tutoring got even more specific saying they would like to see more special needs tutoring and at an earlier age. Surveys that addressed more college prep classes would like to see more advanced placement classes, as well as more foreign languages.

Question #2 What do you think we are doing well?

  • Global connect
  • Great staff
  • Various extra-curriculars
  • Reading programs

Responses addressed areas that people thought our district was doing well in varied. Many people liked the global connect system, while other surveys strongly praised the staff members. Programs that supplement our curriculum, such as reading programs, were also mentioned as things our district does well. Finally, many surveys showed a lot of support for our various extra-curricular programs that address a variety of students.

Question #3 What programs/activities currently offered at SPS appeal to your children?

  • Art
  • Band
  • Sports
  • Destination Imagination
  • Special events (family fun night)

The programs/activities that we offer that appealed to the children of our district echoed answers to questions number two. People expressed great interest in the various extra-curricular activities we have district wide.

Question #4 What programs are valued to you as a parent?

  • Everything from #3
  • Anything that can help them as adults
  • Web site
  • Global connect
  • Small class sizes

The responses for question number four included very similar answers to question number 3. In addition, things were added such as anything that will help them as adults, a good web site, and small class sizes.

Question #5 In school, students receive a grade based on their performance. How would you grade SPS?

  • A - 19
  • B - 39
  • C - 8
  • D - 1

The number indicates the number of surveys returned that graded SPS that specific grade.

Question #6 The grade you gave SPS is based on:
a)personal experience at SPS
b) information received through friends and family
c) through television, newspaper, radio
d) other

  • A - 63
  • B - 9
  • C - 0
  • D - 3

The number indicates the number of surveys returned rating each of the options a-d. Most surveys based the grade they gave SPS on personal experience. Some of the information from the surveys indicated that their knowledge came from what they heard from friends and/or family.

Question #7 Is there anything else you would like us to know?

  • Quicker/better managed student problems

The main response throughout the surveys for question number seven was that parents would like to see students’ problems handled quick/better. However, the responses did not elaborate as to what this meant.

Question #8 Do you have any questions for us?

  • Larger variety of summer programs
  • Schedule changes in HS

The questions that were posed to SPS were few. One of the questions was about starting more summer programs for students and families so they could interact more with the staff. The other question was about why the high school was switching its schedule.

*These percentages correspond to how many students are represented district wide by the surveys.

% returned from each building
Elementary - 14.97% (481 students)

Middle School - 9.58% (240 students)

High School - 4.2% (330 students)

The turnout for the surveys was far lower than what we hoped. We are working on better ways to administer the survey in order to increase participation. In the future we hope to have more input from families in the district so that we can work together to improve SPS and our community.
